World’s first hydrogen powered tramcar debuts in China. Sifang Co in China announced the world's first hydrogen powered tram. The tram can be refilled with hydrogen in three minutes and can then run for 100 km at speeds as high as 70 km per hour. Although there is no confirmation yet as to when the tram would be operational. "The average distance of tramcar lines in China is about 15 km, which means one refill for our tram is enough for three round trips" per company spokesperson. The California Energy Commission announced on May 1, 2104 it will invest $46.6 million to accelerate development of publicly accessible hydrogen refueling stations in California in order to promote a consumer market for zero-emission fuel cell vehicles. The awards include six 100% renewable hydrogen refueling stations, and will add 13 new locations in Northern CA and 15 in Southern CA strategically located to create a refueling network along major corridors and in regional centers. Toyota Fuel Cell Car to be Sold in the USA from 2015 for Under $100,000 The price of Toyota’s first commercial fuel cell car offering in the USA is expected to be between $50,000 and $100,000. Speaking at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference, Toyota Motor Sales USA group vice president of strategic planning Chris Hostetter said that the cost factor of the vehicles, which will be on sale in the USA from 2015, is in the region of $50,000 and that customers should likely see a sticker price under $100,000. Unfortunately the car can also only be sold initially in states that have a viable hydrogen infrastructure; at present that limits sales to California and New York claims Hostetter – combined the states represent just under 20% of the total US car market. May 13, 2013 The Energy Department today launched H2USA—a new public-private partnership focused on advancing hydrogen infrastructure to support more transportation energy options for U.S. consumers, including fuel cell electric vehicles. The new partnership brings together automakers, government agencies, gas suppliers, and the hydrogen and fuel cell industries to coordinate research and identify cost-effective solutions to deploy infrastructure that can deliver affordable, clean hydrogen fuel in the United States. DOE plans modest push for fuel cells Policy shift gives hydrogen a boost The U.S. Department of Energy soon will launch a campaign to promote hydrogen cars. The project is tentatively called H2USA, in reference to the chemical symbol for hydrogen gas. The DOE is signing up automakers, suppliers and other companies that want to see hydrogen fuel cell vehicles hit the marketplace. "There still are a lot of challenges. Infrastructure is critical," said Sunita Satyapal, program manager for fuel cell technologies at the DOE. It appears car OEMs are teaming to introduce fuel cell technology. It has been reported that Toyota will provide BMW with drive train and hydrogen storage technology. Meanwhile Ford is joining with Daimler and Renault-Nissan to speed development of cars that run on hydrogen, with hopes of bringing a vehicle to market in as little as four years. Under the alliance, each company will invest equally in the technology. They plan to develop a common fuel cell system that the companies will use to power their own vehicles. From the July 25, 2012 issue of the hydrogen journal, Stephen Chu, US Secretary of State for Energy, has told US news service that he is much more interested in hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles now than he was in 2009 when he first started in his role. The DOE's Fuel Cell Technologies Program published a quarterly newsletter called "H2 Safety Snapshot" - The newsletter promotes the continued safe operation of DOE hydrogen projects by featuring the latest information on hydrogen safety best practices. The development of a German network of hydrogen filling stations is gaining pace. The automotive manufacturer Daimler AG and the Linde technology group announced in Stuttgart that they intended to open 20 new filling stations in Germany over the next three years. This will more than triple the number of public hydrogen filling stations in the country. The new stations, which involve an investment in the tens of millions, would enable every location in Germany to be reached by a fuel-cell vehicle by the year 2015.
